When I was in high school I began almost all of my realistic drawings by shading. When I took an art class in college (which I didn't complete because it was very pricy), the art teacher wanted us to draw the contours of everything. Right before I dropped the class he had begun to have us practice shading. For some reason or another, I thought I needed to start all my drawings with contours first and then add shading. My husband told me that I should try to only shade and as I shade I draw what I am drawing and not do any contours. I told him that is what I used to do, but I thought I wasn't supposed to. Turns out that that was what my art teacher in college was building up to. It is actually much easier for me to do it this way, though by now I am out of practice.
